My Year of Doing and Being Different

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.  For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-39, NKJV)

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all. (Psalm 34:19, NKJV)

Earlier this year, our pastor challenged us to make the year 2014 different. He encouraged us to go out and do things we had never done before. His challenge excited me, I accepted his challenge with my whole heart and I did as many different things as I could squeeze into one year! I kept a list so that I wouldn't forget anything.

My Year of Doing and Being Different:

  • joined a gym
  • started making handmade cards (Let's just say I have been craft challenged.)
  • started running
  • drove the Oregon Coast
  • visited Yosemite
  • significantly lowered my sugar intake
  • ran the Happiest 5k on earth
  • signed up for Lavaman
  • started training for said Lavaman
  • went glacier hiking (at times, that was glacier crawling)
  • bruised my butt bone on said glacier
  • ran the Gecko Gallup (5k) in Honolulu (with my youngest who spiked a fever midrace)
  • opened another location in Alaska (www.starterman.com)
  • due to geographical location, cancelled my Lavaman registration (awww shucks)
  • kissed a pirate
  • hung out with Superman
  • danced with Rod Stewart at 70's Night at my church
  • learned how to cross country ski
  • hiked to the top of Hunter's Pass (Eagle River Alaska)
  • addressed some major relationship issues
  • lost 12 pounds
  • finished a Spartan Race
  • sprained my ankle
  • taught homeschool in my bed for the next 2 weeks to keep my ankle elevated

During the Spartan Race (mentioned above), I did a list of things I had never done before.

  • walked in a creek for approximately 1/4 mile...neck deep (in very cold water)
  • climbed (some may call it crawled) a cargo net that was draped over a ditch
  • slid down a 6' berm into a mud pit
  • swallowed mud
  • crawled underneath barb wire draped over a mud pit
  • carried 25 pounds of steel shot up a hill...and back down again
  • pulled a huge truck tire up a hill
  • crawled underneath barb wire draped over a mud pit...again
  • swallowed mud...again
  • threw a spear
  • used a rope to climb over an a frame wall
  • hopped across the finish line...with assistance
All this caused me to come very close to throwing up three times and almost passing out twice. I had thrown up before...but not passed out. Both are added to the list for effect.

As I look back over the year 2014, I see:

  • many things I didn't think I could ever do
  • somethings I thought I could do but were way more difficult than I had anticipated
  • some things I had to do that still come as a total shock to me

As I look forward to the year 2015, I see:

  • I am more than a conqueror
  • God delivers me out of all affliction
  • nothing can separate me from God's love

How can I make such a bold proclamation? Because God says I can. (Romans 8:37-39, Psalm 34:19, 2 Timothy 3:16, Numbers 23:19) And if you belong to Him, (1 Corinthians 7:23, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20) you can make the same bold proclamation. Please don't allow another day to go by without God as your deliverer! (Psalm 18:2)

If you've never accepted Jesus as your Lord, please pray this simple, life changing prayer with me.

Father, in the name of Jesus, I acknowledge Your Son Jesus. I believe You are and I believe You are a rewarder! I believe Jesus died for me and on the third day, He rose again! I believe Jesus concurred death, hell, and the grave! Jesus, I invite you to come into my heart as my Lord and my Savior! Thank You for saving me! Old things have passed away and You make all things new! Jesus, You are my good Shepherd, please guide me, teach me, and show me Your perfect plan for my life...my life starts now! Thank You for calling me out of darkness and into Your marvelous light!

If you have accepted Jesus in the past; however, have been walking with something or someone other than Him as your Lord, please pray this simple, life changing prayer with me. God always wants you back!

Father, in the name of Jesus, please forgive me for going my own way. Thank You for always wanting me back...no matter how far I think I've gone or the bad I think I've done. Thank You that the Blood of Jesus is always enough! Thank You for always loving me! Thank You for always accepting me! Thank You for always wanting me! Thank You for choosing me! I boldly proclaim today, today is a new day for me! I will never go back to my own ways, but I will walk in Your Word all the days of my life! And I will spend the rest of my days honoring and blessing You! Thank You for calling me out of darkness and into Your marvelous light!

Now that you are empowered with God's promises, what are you going to do different this year? We would love to hear from you!

It's a Trap

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
(Proverbs 4:23, NLT)

A while back, my youngest child decided she wanted to trap a wild bird for scientific (but mostly fun) purposes.

She constructed her (very unsophisticated) trap, using two plastic bins, packing tape, string, a toilet paper core and some bird seed.

One look at her trap and I was thinking, “This will never work.” But much to my surprise, she trapped four birds in a very short amount of time.

Another thing that greatly surprised me, was the fact that the birds just kept coming back to the trap. The trap was not elaborate or camouflaged in any way. Other birds perched in the trees near our deck and watched their bird friends get caught in the trap. But seeing all still this didn’t deter the birds. They kept willingly hopping right into the trap. It seemed they were lined up waiting for their turn in the trap!

I was watching as she trapped bird after bird. I wondered, “How does this happen? How does she keep trapping these (obviously intelligent) birds?”

The Holy Spirit spoke to my heart and said,
“The birds only see the bait. They don’t see the trap.”

Oh hello...somebody stand up and shout!

The birds were so focused on the bait…they completely ignored the trap.

Bait (defined by Merriam-Webster and for our purposes today) is, "to try to make (someone) angry by using criticism or insults” and "to use dogs to make (an animal, such as a bear or bull) angry or afraid”.

Trap (defined by Merriam-Webster and for our purposes today) is, "something by which one is caught or stopped unawares” and "a position or situation from which it is difficult or impossible to escape”. (Emphasis are mine.)

Bait comes in different forms. Birdseed was an effective bait for the birds; however, what bait can effectively be used to trap you?

Every day, in every circumstance, life and death is placed before us. The power in that is…we get to choose. We choose life, blessings, prosperity, good, or curses, disaster, adversity, evil. ((Deuteronomy 30:15, NLT, NKJV, NASB, YLT)

At times, some of us have been trapped into doing what others believe we should do...even though, we know what to do and not do in order to guard our hearts. Listen, at times...you are the only one who will make diligently guarding your heart a priority. Don't allow anything rob you of that.  If your life hasn't been on the course you want it to be on...examine yourself to insure you have been guarding your heart.

I pray for every reader today to, immediately recognize the traps that are set before us and for each of us to look straight through the bait and see and avoid the trap. In the name of Jesus, I declare we choose life!

DISCLAIMER: No birds were harmed in this scientific study or blogpost.

Church Work is W.O.R.K.

For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. (2 Corinthians 9:10, NLT)

I’ve done a lot of church work.

My first “ministry” was baking cakes every Sunday morning for our church’s fellowship time which required me to get up at 5:30 a.m.

On Sunday…every Sunday.

I had an infant and a toddler at the time. *Nuff said*

I’ve scrubbed toilets, cooked meals (under direct supervision), washed dishes, ushered, greeted, spearheaded a fundraiser, coordinated Operation Christmas Child, insured church bulletins were prepared and submitted, organized a weekly play group for toddlers, worked in the audio department/video department/nursery/taught high school Sunday school, and provided photography services for fliers/websites/promos, and shot events that required me to be at every practice as well as work 10-12 hours shooting…that does not include editing time (which is generally 3-7 minutes per shot).

Yes, I counted.

All free of charge.

I only mention the monetary statement because that is generally the first statement someone makes when they are required to do more than they feel like doing.

“What? You expect me to do what?! I’m not even getting paid for this!”

I don’t at all mention my “ministries resume” to toot my own horn. I know where my help comes from. (Psalm 121:2) I merely mention it to validate, I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I have put in enough time to qualify to speak on the matter.

I know people have jobs, kids, car issues, and can be short on funds and energy. I can completely relate. My life isn’t, nor has it ever been perfect and/or easy by any means.

But I also know that I know this, when I give…my God gives unto me…with good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, poured right in my lap! (Luke 6:38)

“It" what? Supernatural blessings, in every area of my life!

Supernatural is the only way to effectively explain my life!
(John 10:10)

When all is said and done, whether at home, or on the job, or in church,
I don’t work for man…I work for the Lord.

Either I want to serve with my whole heart,
or
I don’t want to serve at all.

When I serve, it is my responsibility to insure everything I think, say, and do...glories the One who called me. (Colossians 3:23, 1 Corinthians 10:31, Galatians 1:15)

Everything else is checked at the door.

When I am at church and someone asks, “Can you…..?"  I've made it a personal goal to do my best to say, "Yes ma’am/sir, I can do whatever you need me to do.” After all, I wouldn’t even have seed, had God not given seed to me to sow. (2 Corinthians 9:10)

In addition to agreeing to fill a position comes the responsibility to submit to that authority. (1 Peter 2:13-14) I am not called to argue against, talk about, or reason with authority.

Since I'm on a roll, here is a hard topic. Sometimes we have to jump in and do something that isn’t within “normal” realms but is completely outside our comfort zone.

It is outside our comfort zone where we learn
what we can really accomplish.

I use to be one who didn’t like change and I certainly didn’t like sudden change. That is until I heard Pastor Slavic Sagach teach a message at Walk on Water Faith Church. He made a statement long ago that I still live by today. He said, “The way you handle change, is a direct reflection of your character.”

Oh hello. Somebody please help me now.

Taking his statement as a personal challenge teaches flexibility. Perhaps it taught me to0 much flexibility but that's a whole other blog post. *lol*

Coming in for a landing...the reality is, scrubbing toilets at church is no easier than scrubbing toilets at work.

Let me bring it all home with this.

If a new girl comes to town, I've seen men move all heaven and earth and not let hell stand in the way to take that girl out on a date. How much more, must our affections be turned toward God and His kingdom?

That's a rhetorical question *grin*

Crossing the Border

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. (Philippians 2:12-13, NKJV)

A short time back, my family and I drove the AlCan Highway from Seattle to Alaska (via the Cassiar Highway).

After crossing the U.S./Canada border, we still saw U.S. influence even though we were in Canada.

However, the further we drove away from the border and the deeper we drove into Canada, we saw less and less of the things we were familiar with. Brand names, chain stores, animal crossing signs, wildlife, and landscape, were all different...the deeper we drove into Canada.

Do you see the bear?

Once we cross any “border", we can identify "influence" directly across the line from where we were. But the deeper we get into where we are going, the prior influence decreases while our new influences increase.

When we are first born again (John 3:3, Romans 10:9, John 3:16), we cross over a “border". (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Please be encouraged, don’t get frustrated at things that haven't changed yet (the areas of your life where you are currently struggling). You have "crossed the border” but may still be dealing with “influence” from where you’ve been. (Matthew 6:33, Hebrews 12:1-2)

Renew your mind daily. (Romans 12:2)
Sometimes daily means hourly.
Sometimes daily means moment by moment.

Also, please don't get frustrated at others when you see them operating in ways that aren’t agreeable with you. Stay fixed on Him (not them), pray for them, and lovingly correct with proper motivation when an opportunity arises. (Hebrews 12:1-2, 1 John 4:7, Proverbs 10:12, Mark 12:31, James 5:16)

All this is not at all to use as a excuse to refuse to humbly accept or lovingly administer correction. (Ephesians 4:15, Proverbs 19:20)

Always keep in mind, we are all walking out our own salvation…we are not walking out someone else’s salvation. (Philippians 2:12-13)

Therefore, my dear ones, as you have always obeyed [my suggestions], so now, not only [with the enthusiasm you would show] in my presence but much more because I am absent, work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, [a]with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ). Philippians 2:12, AMP)

Self Control

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23, NKJV)

I have self control because God said I do. (Numbers 23:19, 2 Timothy 3:16) God's Words always override my words and how I currently feel.

Independent of people and/or circumstances,  I (me...myself...and I) always decide (choose) whether or not to operate in self control. (Deuteronomy 30:19)

The same is true for ALL God's promises. (2 Corinthians 1:20)

  • Healing (Isaiah 53:5)
  • Finances ((Luke 6:38, Malachi 3:10)
  • Freedom (Galatians 5:1)
  • Peace (John 14:27, Isaiah 26:3)
  • Abundant life (John 10:10, 1 John 2:25, John 3:15)
  • Love (John 3:16, Romans 5:8)

"LOOPHOLE"!
We must consume (and teach) our whole bible (not just the parts we like),
refusing to live in ignorance. (Revelation 22:19, 1 Corinthians 12:1)
You may currently be walking through the fire
(opposition to receiving God's promises).
That doesn't always mean you've done something wrong. (John 9:2-3)
Jesus told us we would have battles to fight
and
we would have temptations to overcome.
He also told us to  be courageous and not be troubled because
nothing can separate us from His love,
He won't ever leave us,
and
He has already insured our victory
(Romans 8:37-39, Deuteronomy 31:6, Luke 17:1,
Ephesians 6:12, John 16:33, 1 Corinthians 15:57)

SOLUTION!
If you are facing problems today...
  • be strong and courageous because you are not alone,
  • just believe,
  • give Him is rightful place in your life,
  • stay connected to Him,
  • have faith God is on your side,
  • don't waver,
  • never-ever give up on what God has promised you,
  • and allow your spirit (what you know that you know to be true...God's Word) to rule your mouth!

(Deuteronomy 31:6, Mark 5:36, Matthew 6:33, John 15:5, Romans 2:11, Jeremiah 29:11, James 1:6, Galatians 6:9, Romans 4:17)

"But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed." (Isaiah 53:5, NLT)

"Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full--pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back." (Luke 6:38, NLT)

"Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do," says the LORD of Heaven's Armies, "I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won't have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!" (Malachi 3:10, NLT)

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1, NLT)

"I am leaving you with a gift--peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid." (John 14:27, NLT)

"You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!" (Isaiah 26:3, NLT)

"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." (John 10:10, NKJV)

"And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he promised us." (1 John 2:25, NLT)

"so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life." (John 3:15, NLT)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16, NLT)

'but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."(Romans 5:8, NLT)

The Fire In Marriage

From time to time, we welcome a guest blogger to Key Tov Blog. Today's blogpost is from my ten year old daughter, enjoy!

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. (Ephesians 5:25-29, NKJV)

When my Mom was reading today's bible study, I remembered when I camped at  Matanuska Glacier in Alaska. My Dad started a fire and he gave the fire some dry wood, well that didn't last long! So my Dad went to go find some moist wood, that lasted longer than the dry wood.

So as it got late, it got colder. My Dad found some rocks and put them behind the fire to reflect the heat. That warmed us up really quick.

You see, it's almost the same in marriage. If you give your spouse things just to make them happy (like the dry wood) your marriage won't last that long. But if you give your spouse things because you really love them, then that's like the moist wood. It lasts a whole lot longer if you do it because you love them.

Just do it for the next generation, do it for the world, do it for GOD!

And when my Dad put stones behind the fire to reflect heat, thats the love. The "left overs" for your offspring and friends, family, mom, dad, and other couples to understand, "Wow, that's a great marriage we should ASK THEM for tips on how their successful!" Always keep that fire burning! And only let people that will give moist wood to your fire into your life!

Last Text

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered. (Proverbs 28:26 NKJV)

Recently, I was texting with a friend. Their text seemed very…well, a little odd.

After a few minutes, it dawned on me….my friend was texting and driving.

*GASP*

In order for us to avoid being diagnosed with the speck-n-plank syndrome…let’s take a different approach. Let's learn from the situation. (Matthew 7:3-5, Mathew 7:1)

To insure I was correct, I asked, “Are you texting and driving?” My friend responded with, “Yes but I have voice text.”

This is my issue with driving and voice texting.
  1. The recipient still has to read incoming texts in order to respond. Voice texts only work for outgoing texts.
  2. The recipient still has to proofread their outgoing texts to insure the text is correct.
  3. In both scenarios, the driver is still distracted…terribly distracted.
According to the (NHTSA) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Driving while texting is six times more dangerous than driving while drunk."

From my experience, people cannot text and have a decent conversation when they are face to face with someone. Much less text and safely operate a six thousand pound (average weight) vehicle at the rate of speed of sixty miles per hour (average on the highway) creating a velocity of…well, a lot.

Once I discovered my friend was texting and driving, I explained;

"I love you too much. And I will never knowingly be anyone’s last text.”

And I stopped texting, immediately.

Thankfully, my friend has read Dr. Larry Ollison's book, "Breaking the Cycle of Offense" and still loves me. They didn't get offended and hopefully will never text and drive again...even with voice text.

I’m sure you’ve seen the notices that show a picture of a person’s last text. That last text before they crashed their car and hurt or killed themselves or someone else.

Before I get in my car, I put my phone on silent, and put it in my purse. That is my way of committing to not text while I drive.

After this incident with my friend, I started thinking about all the challenges going on Facebook, etc. And I thought to myself, we should make a Last Text challenge.

So, I challenge each and every one of you. Refuse to position yourself where you could be someone’s last text by letting everyone know, I don’t text anyone while they are driving because I love you too much.

Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray for every reader right now to rise up and commit to refuse to text and drive as well as refuse to text anyone who is driving. May each and every one of us understand the magnitude of the power we are responsible for when we are behind the wheel for ourselves as well as all those around us. Thank You Lord for loving us so much, we know to walk in wisdom. Especially when assuming the responsibility of driving a car.

What about you? Will you take the challenge? Will you challenge your friends and family?

Crutches

He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. (Ephesians 4:16, NLT)

I recently hurt my left ankle and have been on crutches all week. While the crutches have helped me move around, I’m not moving around like I should be. And most certainly, not how I prefer to be.

I’ve had to take extra time to tend to my ankle. Ice, elevate, wrap, soak it as well as orally take anti-inflamitories.

The first thing I noticed about using crutches is, the rest of my body has paid the price by compensating for what my left ankle is not currently performing

In other words, when my whole body is doing what it was created to do I can accomplish many things. But since my left ankle isn’t bearing its share of the weight, I haven’t accomplished much.

The Spirit of God has been speaking to my heart and has shown me a direct correlation between my ankle and the church. When the whole church body each does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow so that the whole body is healthy, growing, and full of love.

Of course there are times (seasons) where, the church has to tend to the needs of the hurting. (Ecclesiastes 3:1) But for the most part, the church is created to be healthy, growing, and full of love.

If you are hurt, by all means, tend to yourself and ask others to pray you through to wholeness. But don’t camp out in the city of "Hurtville". Even on crutches, I can help cook, do light housework, and teach homeschool.

We can all do something on our way to full victory!

And as a sidenote;
if you feel as if a church has failed you,
don't camp out there either.
Just determine to do what the LORD has said to do! (Hebrews 10:25)
I don't know how many excuses I've heard about why people refuse to go to church but continue to be faithful to going to the bar.
As if the bar has never failed them.

Ok, I won't camp out there either.

At times, in the church I’ve seen the same 10% of people doing 90% of the work. That equation results in the churches inability to be healthy, grow, and love as it was created to.

When each part does its own special work, the church is everything God created her to be (Ephesians 4:11-12, Ephesians 4:16)

Please allow me to lovingly encourage you, if you are looking at the church and wondering why it isn’t…well, let’s just say, healthy, growing, and full of love…please ask the Lord to bring to your attention precisely what your part is in the body. And as He is faithful to show you, please be faithful to do your own special work. (1 Corinthians 1:9, Colossians 3:23, Ephesians 4:16)

Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray for Your people, the church. Please bring to each and every one of our attention, ways to immediately rise up and do our own special work so that Your church is healthy, growing, and full of love! Lord, we ask You to show us the gifts and talents You have given to each of us, and how we can best use them to serve on another, and bring You all the glory. May everything we think, say, and do, honor You Lord God. And may we always, always remember who it is we are working for.

Patience, Lacking Nothing!

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. (James 1:2-4, NKJV)

Last Saturday, Mike (my husband) and I ran a Spartan Race.

We have ran many races, (5k, 10k while pushing a baby jogger, etc) but the Spartan Race is unlike any other we’ve ever done. On their website (www.spartan.com) they say, “You’ll know at the finish line.”

Yuh. Huh.

The Spartan Race is a race with obstacles…really, REALLY, hardcore obstacles.

To give you an idea of what it is like to be a Spartan, it took us over 1/2 hour to walk from the parking area to the tent where we picked up our race packets.

Yeh.
Just LOOK at that ocean!

At the starting line, there was a really cool MC playing loud music pumping everyone up for the race.

Do not be tricked by that!

At the starting line, the runners can see a trail leading up a small hill.

Do not be tricked by that!

Earlier this year, our pastor challenged us to go out and do things we had never done before. We love our pastor, a lot. But before the end of the this day…I would seriously question his challenge. As well as my acceptance of said challenge. Plus, maybe smack him in the back of his head…please don’t tell him!

We love you pastor!

Mike and I were super pumped about the task that lay ahead and about challenging ourselves by doing something we had never done before.

The day was still young.

A little more loud music and pumping up by the MC and we were off!

A small run up a small hill and then down again into some trees and we were feeling good!

And. Then. Our. First. Obstacle.

We had to walk in a muddy creek, neck deep and the water was cccccccccold!

Hey, no problem right? We’re Spartans!
And...we are five minutes into the race.
Adrenaline if flowing like a raging river, we got this!

Once the guy in the lead was waist deep, he turned around to the rest of us and squealed, “Oh man, this is so cold!"

Some participants were slowly emerging themselves into the creek to adjust to the cold temperature.

Not. Me. Bro.

I dunked myself up to my chin and screamed,
“I’M ALL IN!!!"

That motivated some…while it freaked others out.

In my defense, once I began my initial dunk in that cold water, I had to scream something other than, “OH SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME NOW!!!”.......like a girl.

A woman behind me was upset at the creek obstacle. She kept screaming, “But I’m short! But I’m short! But I’m SHORT!”

Yuh. Never saw her again. Moment of silence please.

After about five minutes, we made it out of the creek…better known as, first obstacle under our belts.

At that point…it was all up hill…in Kualoa Ranch...on Oahu. This would be the same ranch where movies such as...Lost, Jurassic Park, and Wind Talkers were filmed.

Just to give you a visual.

In a word…steep.
In another word…muddy.

And getting muddier by the second as all the dripping wet runners were going up the trail.

About ten minutes later, we made our way up the hill to find our second obstacle…a cargo net.

A cargo net anchored over a steep, long ditch.

I said to myself, “Self, what do you suppose we are to do with that cargo net?”

When the moderator at that obstacle screamed, “Climb up the embankment using the cargo net, if you fall, you pay…15 burpees!”

Ok. I borderline despise burpees…with a passion.

Needless to say, I scaled the cargo net with the ease and expertise of Spiderman!

Ok. Maybe not as pretty but the end result was, NO BURPEES FOR GENICE!
Everybody cheer!

After the cargo net, we had to climb a hill on a muddy, grassy trail to our next obstacle…a mud hole.

I am convinced, this was no ordinary mud hole. It was a mud hole…much like a crawdad hole one would find in Oklahoma with 5’ sides.
Ok a crawdad hole in Oklahoma…on steroids!

I was only slightly muddy at this point…and I really preferred to keep it that way…so I wondered how I could maneuver through the mud hole with only slightly touching the mud…hopefully, only up to my knees. After all, parasites live in mud! In it’s center, the mud hole was only about 3’ deep.

I thought I could crawl down the side, gently enter the mud hole, walk slowly across the center (minimizing my contact with the mud…at least my upper body), and gently crawl up the other side to exit the hell hole….oh, I meant…mud hole.

Once I reached the top of the side of the mud hole…it was quite a bit more slippery than I had anticipated. As a result, I slipped, fell…and rolled down the side…into the mud hole…face first…with all the elegance and gracefulness of the...Three Stooges…yes, all three!

The mud pit moderator yelled, “YEAH! THAT’S WHAT I’M TALK’N ‘BOUT! EMBRACE IT!”

My initial thought was…”I will EMBRACE your neck, with my bare hands!”
But…this was a race, and ain’t nobody got time fo’dat’….or jail.

And then, I saw the sports photographer clicking away with the speed of a machine gun operator! Thanks for that, I appreciate it.
That is most likely seed-time-harvest, I’m a big girl. I can accept that.

(Pictures should be ready in seven days. I will post them when we receive them.)

Completely and totally drenched with caked on mud, I continued my trek up the hill.

Up, up, up, up…the muddy, grassy trail…I started to see signs of the participants who had gone before me. Shoe inserts. Huh?! Yes, people had started to throw their shoe inserts on the sides of the trail. What was this? Perhaps a Spartan tactic? Did they know something I didn’t know?

I may have followed suit; however, that would mean I would have to stop and bend over. At that point, I had a concern if I stopped, I might not start again! And if I bent over, I might not straighten up again!

Yes…it IS THAT brutal.

Plus, I have great running shoes! They are cool, and I’m not going to abandon them on the trail like yesterdays trash! As you can see, I am very attached to my running shoes!

Participants began to drop like flies. All along the trail there were people sitting and laying on the ground.

About a fourth of the way up the very steep, muddy, grassy, mountain (notice how the hill suddenly turned into a mountain…hey, don't judge) I saw our next obstacle. A mud pit…although not as deep…but draped with barbed wire. Real barbed wire. With real barbs. Sharp barbs. Needless to say, I was shocked! Barbs can scratch people! I haven’t seen barbed wire since I left Oklahoma…in 1998! And I had never crawled under barbed wire...through mud!

With all seriousness, (trying to hide my underlying panic) I turned to my race partner, knowing he was previously an Army man, and said, “How is the best way to get through to the other side?!”

His response, “Crawl and roll.”

Ok…I do not "crawl and roll". I was wearing pink nail polish! Girls with a pink mani and pedi do not…”Crawl and roll”…through the mud…under barbed wire!
(Insert squeaky voice.)

Until. Now.

I estimated the, “Crawl and roll" requirements to be about ten rolls across. I’m a goal setter. Deep breath. Composure. I am going to finish this!

Roll #10
Crawl
Roll #9
Crawl
Roll #8
Crawl
Roll #7

Somewhere midway crawling and rolling in the mud…I got dizzy, really dizzy.

Picture it.
There is barbed wire zig zagged across the top of me.
Mud beneath me.
Racers in front of me (under barbed wire…in the mud).
Racers behind me (under barbed wire…in the mud).

And I’m dizzy, really dizzy.

I had no other alternative but to crawl and roll on.

Mike helped me up once I was out from under the barbed wire. I told him I was dizzy. He told me to rest. I was bent over, trying to catch my breath while not looking like a wimp….a difficult task indeed.

Ok…let’s just establish, Mike is way tougher than I am. In my head, I thought…I don’t want to hold him back but I know he won’t leave me.

I looked up at him and said, “Ok, I’m ready to…”

Everything got real swirly and fuzzy. So I bent down and said, “I gotta catch my breath.” Yea…breathing, really good plan.
Passing out, on the side of the Kualoa Mountain range on a grassy, muddy trail…not a good plan.

I caught my breath (more importantly, didn't pass out or throw up) and we made it to the top!

As I was catching my breath (yes, again), I looked around and saw the most amazing sight. A full blown view of the pacific ocean. I cannot even tell you how much I appreciated those ocean breezes! When all of the sudden, my moment was interrupted by the sounds of ambulance sirens. Ambulances? Yes, participants were being taken out by ambulance. Three ambulances to be exact! I determined…I will NOT be one of those!

We took off, rounded a group of trees and saw our next obstacle. We had to carry or drag (but not roll) a truck tire that was connected to a rope and anchored in the ground, run back down the rope, and pull the rope to get the tire back to where we started.

Done. Like a boss.

The prior ambulance scene gave me my second wind and I was off…down the hill. But going down was almost as hard as up! I told myself, “That’s ok, I can do this.”

Only to come upon Spartan trail tape leading us into thick trees! The trees were so thick there was only one way in and one way out. The kicker…the trail “hole” that got us through to the other side was full of thorny branches and so we had to walk through bent halfway over.

My lower back was screaming, “You gotta straighten up!”
My lungs were screaming, “I gotta have more air!”
My inner being was screaming, “I gotta slap your face for doing this!
What WERE you thinking??!”

Then. It. Started. To. Rain.

We made it through the forrest of terror, (insert attitude) only to see multiple sets of monkey bars. But not at all the fun kind of monkey bars you see at parks. These were big macho man monkey bars, tall and stretched across at least four times longer than fun kid kind monkey bars. I had to jump up to even reach the first bar.

I am not gonna lie to ya…I did not make it all the way across…burpee time…I accept it. Don’t even care.

Patience…lacking nothing.

Once the monkey bars/burpees escapade was over, we were headed straight to the finish line….or. so. we. thought.

Nope…a not so quick detour back up the hill…yes. Back. Up. The. Hill….uuuugh.

Patience…lacking nothing.

When much to my dismay we were met with a very large man (who I am STILL convinced is related to Goliath) shouting, “Grab the sand bag and get up the hill! If you want to be a tough, grab two sand bags! And if you want to be an over achiever, you can grab me and carry ME up the hill! HAHHAHAAHAHAAHAHA!"

Yea. Needless to say, I grabbed my sand bag and ran away from him as fast as I could! Who knew all my Oklahoma days of carrying 50 pound bags of horse feed would come in handy?!

"As fast as I could” quickly turned into a snail’s pace. Mike kept saying, “I will carry your sandbag if you need me to.” I repeatedly refused. Not to be stubborn and refuse help, but this race turned into a race I was running against myself.

Patience…lacking nothing.

I made the circle up the hill, back down again, and gladly dropped my sandbag for the next victim-slash-race participant. I turned toward the finish line.

And then, got dizzy again. I really didn’t know how much further I could go without throwing up and/or passing out.

I had to stop and rest. I gained my composure and took off for the finish line. The finish line seemed so close in comparison to where I had been.

I rounded a corner of trees and saw…yet another barbed wire mud pit, except this one was even longer than the previous one.

My immediate response was, "You have GOT to be kidding me??!! This race just doesn’t let up!! Even near the end!”

But then I decided, either I am going to run this race or I am not going to run this race. I didn’t decide which obstacles would be thrown at me; however, I was going to finish this race to the best of everything that was in me. (Hebrews 12:1, Ephesians 1:3)

In many ways, the 2nd barbed wire mud pit was more difficult than the first. I was tired, I was nauseous, I was dizzy, and did I mention...this pit was even longer than the first.

I slowly got down on my hands and knees to roll under the first barbed wire into the pit. Rocks in the mud kept hitting the soft tissue by my knee caps, making my knees give away resulting in me falling flat on my stomach.

Patience…lacking nothing.

I’ve never heard so much moaning and groaning in my life. Most specifically mine. Not the whining kind, but the I am being pushed to my absolute lengths of everything I am. Exactly what am I made of?

Patience…lacking nothing.

This race was a mind game beyond mind games. With every obstacle, I thought it was my last obstacle and I would soon be crossing the finish line. Only to (by this point) walk closer and see yet another obstacle.

Patience…lacking nothing.

This time, it was an 8 ft wall. We had to climb the wall using only the frame on the sides. In other words, the wall was made with boards that met perfectly and was completely flat except the frame on both ends.

Mike put his hands on the wall and let me use his hands for foot holds.

Told you he is tough!

Once I straddled the wall and was sitting on top, I discovered….not only were there no footholds climbing up but there also were no footholds going down. Sitting on top of the wall gave me a very clear indication of precisely how high 8’ really is.

Yeh, it’s tall.

Mike ran around to the other side of the wall and told me to let go and he would catch me. I did, he lost his balance, shoving himself into me, then us into the wall and I hit so hard my back popped.

I was winded but so close to the finish line so, “Tally-Ho!"

After a few minutes I was able to trot towards the finish line when I saw our next obstacle. A wall approximately 15-20' long, with blocks for hands and feet. We were to scale the wall using the blocks and weren’t allowed to touch the top or fall off the wall.

One question.
Who on earth is the Spartan creator???
And what is wrong with him/her???
And who actually pays for this???

Oh….that would be me!

And that's three questions but who is counting?!

I decided, just shut up and do it
In my mind, I was thinking…truly, this has to be our last obstacle.

Nope.

Patience...lacking nothing.

That was when I saw…a huge muddy pit with a frame, really high in the sky. All across the frame hung ropes that we were to climb, ring a bell, climb back down, jump in the muddy pit (waist deep), then climb out of said pit and continue on to the (now in sight) finish line.

I tried and tried to climb the rope but my hands and shoes (well, my everything) was so muddy I could not get a grip. Even if I had been able to get a grip, I highly doubt I could've  made it all the way to the top.

Again, not going to lie, couldn’t make it to the top.
Could, however- crawl out of the mud pit!

The finish line was calling me like a dinner bell to a pack of hungry, rabid dogs!

We were almost there. We could only see four more obstacles! We can do this!

My shoes had gotten very muddy and the back of my socks had slipped down to the middle of my feet. I could see the finish line and I didn’t want to stop and fix my socks. I was so close. Besides, my everything was caked with mud so stopping to fix my socks wouldn’t really have changed much.

I was midway between the rope-climbing-mud pit-bell ringing obstacle and the spear throwing obstacle when…IT happened.

My left ankle popped and I fell down. Mike said, “I heard that pop, what was that?!”

I was hurting so bad, I thought I might throw up. I didn’t know what to do, I did not want to admit defeat. I knew Mike couldn’t carry me and finish the race. There were four more obstacles and I wasn’t sure I could finish. I said, (in pain, through gritted teeth) “You are going to have to call Medical and have them take me out of here.”

This may seem like a rabbit trail; however, there is a point. I truly, wholeheartedly, and endearingly love Hawaii’s people. They are a bunch of family oriented, loving, helpful people who have always been so welcoming and good to us.

I was so disappointed. About the time, I thought I was going to have to quit and give up (I thought my ankle was broken) two local boys walked up and said, “Everything ok here?” I told them I would be ok and thanked them. They said, “We are so close to the finish line. You are going to finish. We are going to get you across the finish line if we have to carry you. We leave no one behind.”

(Insert tears & immense gratitude.)

These local boys, who I had never seen before and will most likely never see me again, hoisted me up on their shoulders, (along with Mike) and carried me to the next obstacle.

They put me down, I threw my spear, and wondered how I would get to the next obstacle when…there stood my local boys and said, “Let’s do this!”

They carried me to the next obstacle, which was using a rope to climb over an a framed wall.

I made it up and over the wall.

Warning: It ain’t pretty.

My local boys were waiting to help Mike carry me over the fire pit.

Once we were over the fire pit, I told them I was sure I could crawl under the catwalk.
A great big shout out to local boys always willing to help a fellow comrade!

I was able to crawl through unassisted and Mike and I crossed the finish line together.

Mike helped me to the First Aid Tent where I told them I needed to see Medical. I was still in a lot of pain so two men carried me to an RTV and drove me to Medical.
(That was a rough ride. Everything in Spartan is rough!)
Medical evaluated me, elevated and iced my ankle. Thankfully by the time they drove us to our truck I thought I would be able to avoid an emergency room visit.

Thank God for friends and family members in the medical field who told me what to do to care for my ankle. And thank God for pray-ers who cover me and declare wholeness! I’m getting stronger every day!

In closing, a couple weeks ago we were hiking (sometimes crawling) the Matanuska Glacier in Alaska (which is so far beyond my element) and I just THOUGHT that was tough! Glacier hiking is a baby walk compared to a Spartan race! Spartan brings a whole new definition to tough.

Today, as I lay in my bed, (ankle braced, elevated and iced) I realize my “first aid drawer” (my drawer that holds my ankle brace, shoulder brace, Rock tape, Doterra deep blue, and anti-inflamitories) now runneth over. What does all this mean?

It simply means I have risen to the challenge our pastor gave us earlier this year…go out and do things you have never done before.

What can you do that you have never done before?
We would love to hear from you, no matter how great or how small, do something you have never done before and share it with us!

And may we all have a servant's heart like the heart the Hawaiian people live by!
